These are our historic guiding principles established in Surry County in 1797, when there was founded the “Christian” Church of Virginia.
We worship in a traditional setting in a building designed for such. Music is provided by the organ, piano, adult choir, and the occasional children’s bell choir. Our pastor provides a weekly solo just prior to his sermon that follows the theme of his message.
We gather for a time of education for all ages prior to worship. This is a time during which there is conversation about scripture and the impact it makes upon our lives as Christians. The teachers vary from week to week each offering their unique understanding of the lesson that most often has a theme for each quarter of the year. Respect is given of all understandings as we value the personal growth that comes through dialogues of differing opinions.
We encourage gathering for enjoying the company of other members. Regular dinners are held at which individuals and families bring a dish of food to share. There are small groups specifically for women and for men. Through these activities of spending time together, we grow in our knowledge and care of one another so that we are a family in Christ Jesus.
Our pastor is the spiritual leader of the congregation who is available to help individuals answer the questions of faith for themselves. In times of personal crisis the pastor desires to be present and to offer prayers of comfort and guidance. His sermons are intended to help us understand the Old and New Testament writings as the living Word of God that provides guidance for the challenges of our daily lives.
All are welcome!
- The Lord Jesus Christ is the only head of the church.
- "Christian" is a sufficient name for the church.
- The Holy Bible is a sufficient rule of faith and practice.
- Christian character is a sufficient test of fellowship and of church membership.
- The right of private judgment and liberty of conscience is a right and a privilege that should be accorded to and exercised by all. (Individuals right and responsibility to read and interpret scripture for themselves and choose their path of life.)
